How SEO Can Help Your Business
If you haven’t heard of SEO then you must have been living under a rock for the last decade, and that rock clearly doesn’t have wifi. Ever since Google emerged as the leading search engine every marketer, business owner, and web builder has been focused on the same question: “How do I get my site to appear on page 1 of Google’s search results?” Well at Mahi Web we’re always looking for ways to help our clients get the most out of their sites in order to increase the profitability of their business so today we’re going to give you a crash course in SEO.
But first what is SEO? And how does it work?
SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimisation”, which might sound complicated but it’s basically just a way of proving that your site is the best in your specific market. See Google uses a complex algorithm to rank every single site on the internet and SEO is a measurable way for you to tick off the boxes and prove to Google that your site is worth showing in its index. Think of it like a beauty pageant and Google is the judge: you’re all there to win the title of “World’s Best Website” but you’re all going to be scored and ranked based on your performance and ultimately only one of your can take out top place. And much like a beauty pageant, Google don’t just score your site based on one category but many (although they are yet to add a swimsuit portion to their algorithm).
The idea behind SEO is to try and score the highest in every category in order to prove to Google that your site should rank higher than your competitors.
Now when we said that this algorithm was complex we meant it; there are literally hundreds of categories, or “ranking factors”, that Google score your site on. Although the actual algorithm itself is kept about as secret as the Coca-Cola recipe, there’s a lot that we can guess at; we’ve attached a list of what leading web designers think the factors may be to give you a thorough idea.
Okay, so does this all really work? And can SEO actually help you to gain market shares?
